WHY OPTIMA BATTERIES?

The introduction of the OPTIMA range of spiral-wound, AGM, batteries by Plan My Power was designed to solve many of the critical issues around the use of deep cycle batteries in the 4x4 industry.

The primary advantages of the Optima range of Yellow Top batteries are as follows:

• THEY CAN ACTUALLY DEEP CYCLE! The average Calcium deep cycle battery is really only intended to cycle down to 50%, or so – if you wish to retain the life expectancy of the battery. The Optima battery on the other hand, can be cycled down to flat and still comes back after recharging with no discernable damage.


• A PROPER HYBRID BATTERY: The Optima Yellow top is both a Deep Cycle and High Cranking battery. Thus for a Main battery on a 4x4 you can comfortable link it in with your other deep cycle auxiliary Yellow Tops and make a big battery bank. This is thus excellent for winching applications as well as being able to employ any of your auxiliary batteries for a Main.


• FASTER CHARGE AND DISCHARGE: One of the main problems with having a powerful alternator or charger, is that most deep cycle batteries can only charge or discharge at around 20% of their rated capacity. This tends to lengthen the time it takes for both these functions. The Optima, on the other hand, can take a charge rate of around twice that amount, thus shortening both charging and discharging times. When this is combined with the MXS Booster Regulator, this enables much faster recharging when travelling at slower speeds, or when the battery voltage has been considerably depleted.


• THE OPTIMA CAN HOLD CURRENT FOR LONGER PERIODS: Most batteries when left unused for several weeks will go flat due to natural discharge. The Optima, however, does not, and you can thus start your vehicle even after leaving it in the garage for several months knowing that it will start!


• THE OPTIMA IS ‘SPILLPROOF’: Most batteries when slanted, bounced around, or mishandled will lose acid mixture. The Optima does not and this enables them to be located at any angle without spillage or loss of performance.


• THE OPTIMA IS VIBRATION-PROOF: The average deep cycle batteries do not like being subjected to constant vibration; the Optima is not affected by this scenario and does not deteriorate as a result of it. It can withstand some 15 times the vibration of ordinary batteries – useful for ‘Bundu Bashing’!!


• HIGHLY TEMPERATURE RESISTANT: The design of the Optima is such that it can withstand much higher, and lower, temperatures than ordinary Deep Cycle batteries. The African sun can be pretty hot, and lead to very high ‘under-the-bonnet’ and even in-vehicle temperatures which negatively affect the performance of the average batteries.


• TAKES UP LESS FLOOR SPACE: The design of the Optima translates into a different shape which allows the Optima to fit into smaller areas in a vehicle thus optimising floor space which is always at a premium in the average 4x4.


• LONGER LIFE EXPECTANCY: The Optima, by virtue of the above features, will last much longer -because of its ability to resist abuse thus making it a better-value-for-money product.


• THE OPTIMA DISCHARGES MINIMALLY WHEN NOT IN USE: Unlike standard Calcium and Lead Acid batteries, the Optima can stand for several months and still have adequate starting power.
